In 1903, Dr. Horatio Nelson Jackson, on a $50 bet, set out to become the first man to drive across America in a newfangled invention known as the automobile. He purchased a used Winton touring car, hired mechanic Sewall K. Crocker as co-driver and brought along a goggle-wearing pit bull named Bud. There were no service stations and virtually no road maps available, they traveled on unpaved roads and crossed railroad bridges over rivers. Jackson encountered pioneers in wagon trains, cowboys who used their lariats to tow him out of sand drifts, wives who traded homecooked meals for a brief ride on the “Go-Like-Hell Machine” and people who deliberately sent him miles out of his way just so their relatives could get their first glimpse of an automobile.
