A beautiful hot spring pool in Yellowstone National Park has transformed from a crystal blue colour to a bright yellowy-green hue, after years of tourists throwing coins in.

The natural wonder, called Morning Glory, has changed colour because of the accumulation of coins, rubbish and natural debris.

It has been dubbed “Fading Glory” because of the glaring transformation it has undergone since the 1950s.

Almost three million tourists flock to the Wyoming national park each year and many throw coins and rocks into the springs, hoping to accrue good luck.

However, the unintentional vandalism has taken its toll on Morning Glory, clogging up its vents and slowing down the water’s circulation.

As a result the water’s temperature dropped and sent orange-coloured bacteria towards the centre of the pool.

Adam Hoffman, from Science Friday, said: “Pigments produced by swaths of those microbes—called microbial mats—are responsible, at least in part, for the brilliant yellows, greens, and oranges that now tinge Morning Glory and other thermal pools in Yellowstone.”

ultrafacts:

Although explanations are offered here, nobody is actually quite sure why they do it. Some species only do it when a predator is a given distance away, but many do it seemingly for fun. Another explanation is that it’s like ‘spy hopping’, similar to what whales and dolphins do in the ocean.

With the green theme growing in popularity across every stretch of the world, more and more people are turning to cargo container homes for green alternatives for office, and even new home, construction. There are countless numbers of empty, unused shipping containers around the world just sitting on the shipping docks and taking up space. The reason for this is that it’s too expensive for a country to ship empty containers back to the their origin in most cases, it’s just cheaper to buy new containers from Asia. The result is an extremely high surplus of empty shipping containers that are just waiting to become someone’s home or office.
